India Greenlights Three Hydrogen Steelmaking Pilot Projects Under National Green Hydrogen Mission

New Pilot Projects: The Indian government has sanctioned three hydrogen-based steel production pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, with a total investment of INR 347 crore.

Key Projects:

1. Matrix Gas and Renewables Ltd: 50 tons-per-day (tpd) plant (consortium with Gensol Engineering, IIT Bhubaneswar, Metsol AB).


2. Simplex Castings Ltd: 40 tpd plant (consortium with BSBK, Ten Eight Investment, IIT Bhilai).


3. Steel Authority of India Ltd: 3,200 tpd plant in Ranchi.


Objectives: These projects aim to explore and validate green hydrogen technologies for low-carbon steelmaking by reducing reliance on coal and coke, and test the technical and economic viability of hydrogen-based steel production.

Timeline: The projects are expected to be commissioned within the next three years.
